It’s Tortuga Season in Cancun

Jan 6, 2012 | No Responses

Tortuga Season in Cancun MexicoIt’s Tortuga season on the Caribbean Coast!  From May to October marine turtles come to the beaches of Cancun (and straight down to Belize) to lay their eggs.  Due to development the sea turtle population has declined so a few hotels on the strip began a volunteer initiative to preserve the eggs in order to protect them from predators.  The Blue Bay Hotel and Ritz Carlton actively participate with staff collecting the eggs, and transporting them to a safe haven where they are buried, and labeled. Once the eggs hatch they are transported to the water to begin a long life…very long!

In 1993 Mexico established the non-profit organization CEA, Centro Ecologico Akumel.  I’ve pulled this excerpt from their website, “Centro Ecológico Akumal (CEA) has had government authorization to run a program for protection, conservation, research and management of sea turtles on four local beaches since 1993”.

During turtle season, CEA staff and volunteers patrol the beaches nightly to identify and protect nesting females, nests, and hatchlings.  They are dedicated to sustaining the ecological environment of Cancun-Tulum.  If you’re interested in helping out, or just in search of further reading please refer to links below.

Anyone can get involved, even if you’re just visiting for a week.  If you’re taking the bus to the Hotel Zone get off at Senor Frogs, and enter the beach through the pathway at Blue Bay Hotel, accesso #6.  The Ritz Carlton is a bit further down, but check out the website for full details.  Get ready to have a sleepless night because you could be there until 3a.m. A tip: Do not use flash lights because this could disturb the reproductive cycle of the Tortuga.
