Lili Flores – Cancun Menswear Designer
Market 28 is the most popular market in downtown (El Centro) Cancun. Vendors line the paths with trinkets, clothing, souvenirs and food all barking the same old lines, trying endlessly to entice shoppers into their booth. It’s a great place to bargain and the items found here are much cheaper than the market in the hotel zone. But, nestled in a building opposite the food court, on the other side of the parking lot is a little boutique called Lilli Flores. Lili is a Mexican menswear designer based out of Cancun who oozes talent and has a personality you just can’t resist. She studied fashion design and has travelled the world in search of the best fabrics, buttons and any other tidbit that inspires her.
All her pieces are made from linens of a luxurious hand, touch feel that she personally sources and meticulously chooses. Linen is the perfect fabric for any hot climate and if you’re planning on making a trip to the tropical paradises of the world than owning one of her pieces is essential. Hand stitched detailing adorn her shirts and you can find the odd print shouting in the most brilliant colours. She uses a printing method called Batik and the labour intensive process can take up to two weeks to complete, and that’s just for one piece of cloth. The art of Batik uses wax to cover certain areas you don’t want painted. The more colours used, the more time it takes.
Fabrics in an array of colours are neatly aligned on hangers and coordinating pants are folded below. The décor is welcoming iwith a combination of earthy tones and the fixtures are all constructed in a dark wood. The selection is endless and there is no doubt you can find a piece that will lure in you in. So if you’re planning on making a trip to the market than I strongly suggest you take a moment and make your way to Lili Flores. She’ll welcome you in with her laid back style and warm smile.
