Mercado 23 – A Great Place to Shop in Cancun

Feb 19, 2012 | No Responses

For a bit of true Mexican culture head to Mercado 23, the oldest and first market in Cancun. It is close to the ADO bus terminal and to get there all you need to do is get on the R-1 bus and it will drop you off right in front of the entrance. If you’re coming in from Avenida Tulum get off just after the McDonalds (you will pass the ADO bus terminal on your left). Cross the street and you’ll find the entrance behind the fire station.

This is a very traditional market, unlike Market 28. Nobody is heckling you to buy their silverware and trinkets and tourists are far and few between. There are a wealth of food vendors stocked with meat, vegetables, spices and fruit all pouring from every corner of available space. Locals busy themselves picking up all their necessities so be ready to weave through the masses and speak up when you need something. Everything is cheap and you can find pretty much anything you need.

Circling the food vendors are little stores bursting with all sorts of treasures; souvenirs, clothes, hair products and leather sandals, the selection is endless. You can even get birthday supplies, piñatas and all. I highly suggest you spend an afternoon here so you can take your time browsing through all the items. This is a locals market so remember to bring pesos.

She's a pleasure to have around and always making us laugh with her crazy stories.
