Mercado 28 – A great place to shop in Cancun

Jan 11, 2012 | No Responses

If you’ve been to Cancun than you’ve heard of Mercado 28, the most popular market in Cancun. Once inside you’ll get lost in the labyrinth of paths lined with vendors. It’s very easy to get here. From the hotel zone take the R-2 bus. You will pass Yaxchillan and on your left hand side is the market. There’s a big sign so you can’t miss it.

Before you enter I must you warn you that sellers are relentless here and will push their product on you to the point of annoyance. There’s no escaping this type of behaviour so you just have to let it go.

Silver is everywhere! Beware you are not ripped off as the general rule is to knock whatever price the quote you in half. I myself am not good a bargaining but you have to have your game face on at all times or I guarantee you the sweet man behind the counter will take advantage of you. The Mexicans are tough but be firm. Many of the stores have the same like items so it’s best to shop around before you commit to an item.

Among all that silver you’ll find artisan booths with beautifully made leather sandals and bags. I myself have one of each and they have stood the test of time. Prices are extremely reasonably and the leather is always genuine. There are a few apparel stores that do not just offer your traditional Mexican clothes but rather items that are a bit more fashion forward.

Of course, there are loads of souvenir shops with your basic tees, ash trays and other trinkets to stock up on before you head home. Some items are worth the buy but remember vendors know this is a tourist destination so don’t get caught up in their selling tactics.

Food is served at the back of the market. There are about eight restaurants all lined next to each other and waiters will back you into a corner, menu you hand. I have eaten at a few and the food is good but the best thing is the juice. For only 20 pesos you can almost a litre of fresh juice with exotic fruits like pineapple and papaya. If you don’t care to eat I would strongly suggest you grab a juice to go while you’re trekking it through the numerous stalls.

Your patience will be tried but I’m telling you it’s all worth a visit to Mercado 28.
