Mexican Culture in Cancun
Some say there’s a void of culture in Cancun, but I assure you the seeds are finally budding. When I first started visiting Cancun 3 years ago the city was void of anything to stimulate the mind.
On Yaxchillan there is the Xblanaque Hotel which houses a Theatre, art gallery, spa and organic café. You can’t miss this place it is massive! If you’re coming to Cancun and don’t want to stay in the Hotel Zone, but are looking for something more than just a hotel room than this is your answer.
Tucked just behind Parque las Palapas you’ll stumble into a quaint space called Café Nirvana. Owner Wanda is always up for hosting events that involve artistic expression. She hosted an evening of late night fun for Earth Hour which was big success. On entering the path that leads to the café stands were set-up selling various accessories with art displayed along the trees lining the sidewalk, and musicians serenading the crowd. I have to say that one of my favourite performances was the mime. He was hilarious, and knew exactly how to get the crowd involved…without being lame.
I also have to mention Roots Café. The owner brings in a local artist to sketch the bands as they perform. All artwork adoring the walls is for sale, and one of kind! With all the typical souvenirs flooding the city it’s nice to have something unique offered.
Slowly but surely Cancun is shaping into an urban’ish city so if you’re looking for something with substance you’ll find it! Culture Cancun is a great blog. Here you can find show schedules for movies (I’m not talking blockbuster mainstream films you can find in any cinema), musical talent and performances, as well as other events going on in the city. Check it out… culturaencancun.blogspot.com/
So there you have it, there is Culture in Cancun you just have to know how to find it.
