Organic Coffee in Cancun

Jun 27, 2011 | No Responses

Now this is something I have been waiting patiently for in Cancun, organic coffee. It’s rare to find gourmet coffee here so when you stumble across one in Cancun you must indulge in a delicious cup or you will forever regret it. B. Org is the newest addition to Cancun’s coffee scene and on this particular day the coffee brewing is from Chiapas, a region in the most southern part of Mexico, bordering Guatemala. Chiapas is not only known for their ingenious traditions and culture but for their premium quality coffee that is rich in flavor.

b'org outsideA wood picket fence embraces the patio and three tables, all tiled in a circular pattern of stones, sit atop a cement floor made up of a mosaic of broken glass and pottery. The foundation is made up of three cold substances, cement, metal and pottery but the various colours found in the tiles soften the space and invite you in; balancing the space perfectly. Bamboo ‘blinds’ are hung to give customers a bit of relief from the sun allowing a few rays to pass through the uneven reeds. Within this environment you would think you’ve landed somewhere in Europe, maybe a Parisian bistro or cafe in Italy but no you are in Cancun.

Once you walk inside a whiff of fresh bread engulfs your senses. There’s nothing better than fresh baked goods to get the stomach rumbling. Roben, the baker, takes such pride in his loaves and is forever playing with different herbs and spices to make his creation unique to any other. Everyday there is something new to try and as you’re biting into oregano and garlic heaven he’s already telling you about another recipe he’s been concocting and testing but won’t share until it is perfect.

Owner Roberto bustle around making fresh smoothies or sandwiches made with grilled veggies, goat cheese and multi-grain bread. All their ingredients are organic, fresh and good for the body. Housed in this little haven of organic you can find soaps, chocolate and even gum. There is a serious eco initiative that is finally catching on in Cancun and B.Org is in every way a part of that. They are forever brainstorming and collaborating with others on events they can throw in order to build awareness in Cancun. This duo is ready to help change the attitude of Mexicans. Anyone who has visited this city would know that there is no such thing as recycling but that is all changing.

Every morning and every evening I am here, getting my fix. Walking into a place where people know your name and take a moment to have a chat is by far the best part of coffee culture. At B.Org I usually sit for hours, distracting the owners in between customers and food preps. There is always a familiar face popping in with a quick story to share or moment to say Hola. It’s about taking time at a slow pace and enjoying each moment. Things aren’t rushed and there is no such thing as a 20 minute sit down rule. You can stay for as long as you’d like and drink or eat whatever your taste buds require. Yes, this is my sanctuary. All you need is a book, coffee and you’re good for the morning.
