Used Bookstore in Cancun

Apr 22, 2012 | No Responses

I don’t know about you, but the one thing I hate (but always need) when traveling for short or long term stays and that is books.  They are a pain to lug around especially when the weight restrictions on luggage is carefully monitored.  Well, there is a little bookstore by the name of ‘Useful Things’ located in El Centro.  They buy books as well as sell, but if they already have two copies on file they are not interested in stocking a third.  For each paperback they offer 15 pesos.  A great deal seeing as paperbacks are 30 pesos.  So if you bring a book in you’ll get 2 for the price of 1.

Approximately 75% of the store house books in English, but there are also sections for Spanish (of course), French, German, and even some Japanese.  Everything is very organized by genre so navigation is a cinch.  Just a warning, if you’re a book lover you could find yourself poking around for hours!  For the most part there are stacks of pocket paperbacks that are either humour or mystery/thriller.  There is a section for wellness which I really like.  Seeing as I live here, and few bookstores offer an English section I find this place to be the best for stocking up on healthy living topics.  Also, these tend to be extremely pricey when purchased brand new.

How to get there…

R2 bus which runs from the Hotel Zone right through El Centro is all you need.  The store is on Avenida Coba just past Tankah.  Opposite the store is a Pemex gas station which is right next to Plaza Hollywood (there’s a Starbucks you can’t miss).
